Project Week

Project Week is an exciting one-week adventure for every student at LPCUWC. It offers students the opportunity to travel to various destinations in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, where they can take on leadership roles, serve local communities, and engage in cultural exchanges.

Academic Year 2024/25 saw 17 groups of students embark on a rewarding journeys, supported wholeheartedly by our alumni and staff. Below are stories and reflections from students about their experiences during the Project Week excursions. We are truly grateful for the dedication of our alumni and look forward to continuing our partnership for future adventures!

During Project Week in La Carlota City, Philippines, we had the privilege of engaging in meaningful cultural exchange and community development. Together with local carpentry experts and ALS teams, we contributed to building the Nagasi Makeshift Community Learning Center (CLC), a space dedicated to learning and growth.

Cultural exchange presentations enriched the experience as we shared and discovered diverse traditions, fostering mutual understanding and respect. This unforgettable week emphasized the power of education and cultural appreciation in strengthening communities.

What an unforgettable adventure we had in Jingdezhen—the world’s porcelain capital! Our group of 16 students dove into the fascinating world of ceramics, exploring renowned museums and embracing hands-on experiences. Together, we practiced traditional techniques like pinch pots, blue and white porcelain painting, slip-casting, and even built our very own kilns for pit-firing!

The journey didn’t stop there. At Yi Design’s factory, the supplier of tiles for our campus, we deepened our understanding of sustainability and the circular economy. To top it off, we rolled up our sleeves and created our own tiles using upcycled clay—a truly rewarding experience.

This trip was not just inspiring but also filled with creativity, collaboration, and meaningful learning.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬:

The warm hospitality of the locals, who welcomed us and thoughtfully answered all our questions, was truly heartwarming. For some of our group members with little prior experience in art, the journey was a source of inspiration, while Jingdezhen emerged as a potential career destination for the aspiring artists among us. It was truly a magical and transformative experience!

Our group partnered with Volunteer Bali to support the local community in Seraya, Bali. We had an incredible time teaching and interacting with underprivileged children, helping them develop English skills through fun activities, games, and play.

Beyond education, we collaborated to paint classroom walls, creating a more inspiring learning space. We also immersed ourselves in Balinese culture, learning traditional dance, participating in morning offerings, and cooking local dishes. This experience deepened our appreciation for cultural exchange and the power of education.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬:

Teaching, learning, and serving in Seraya was truly eye-opening. Through sharing our knowledge with local children and engaging in cultural traditions, we gained not only a deeper appreciation for Balinese life but also a greater understanding of the power of community. This experience reminded us that impact goes both ways—we came to teach, but we left having learned just as much.

Thank you, Volunteer Bali, for this unforgettable experience!

Our project week is an incredible blend of cultural immersion and community service, condensed into a dynamic five-day period filled with thrilling adventures and valuable insights. During the week, our group of 15 students embarked on an intensive and exhilarating journey through the breathtaking mountainous region of Mongolia.

Partnering with the Veloo Foundation, our group of students—representing 11 nationalities—brought our diverse backgrounds, boundless energy, and enthusiasm to two unforgettable days of cultural exchanges and bonding activities with local children. For an entire week, we dove into the richness of Mongolian culture, fully committing to the spirit of learning through action!

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬:

"The cultural exchange was rewarding as I watched everyone gain a deeper understanding of Mongolia. Acting as a translator for the group was a personal milestone for me; my time at LPC had sharpened my English skills so much that I felt proud of how seamlessly I could bridge the language gap. Looking back, it was an unforgettable experience that not only allowed others to learn about Mongolia but also showed me how much I had grown. I am also delighted that everyone in our group was enthusiastic about learning my culture." (Shri, current student from Mongolia)

Our project week was nothing short of extraordinary. From diving alongside majestic sea turtles to drifting effortlessly with the ocean’s currents, every moment was unforgettable.

Through a mix of classroom learning and hands-on fieldwork, our team deepened its understanding of marine ecosystems—their incredible value and the threats they face. We explored the local environment, identified an array of invertebrates, fish, and corals, and sharpened our SCUBA skills in buoyancy, buddying, and teamwork. Not to mention, we contributed valuable observations in the Philippines and laid the groundwork for future citizen science and conservation dives in Hong Kong.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬:

We were inspired by the incredible biodiversity around us and thrilled to see strong bonds form within our group. This experience has truly fueled our passion to protect and restore marine environments.

Our ultimate mission? To empower the next generation of change-makers—and this week proved to be everything we hoped for and more.

Since 2010, LPCUWC has fostered a strong and meaningful partnership with Huaguang Senior High School in Nanning, Guangxi, now one of our sister schools. Through interactive English lessons—including cultural exploration, drama, and dance—alongside experiential activities such as UNESCO cultural heritage weaving, dumpling making, gardening, and dancing, students and teachers from both schools have had the opportunity to learn and grow together.

We also organized a joint outing, immersing ourselves in Guangxi culture by visiting the Tea Village, the Nanning Flowers and Birds Market, and the night market, which further strengthened the bonds of friendship. Additionally, our group traveled to the Detian Waterfall, the largest transnational waterfall in Asia located between China and Vietnam, where we explored its history and captured its stunning scenery through sketching.

Meeting the students of Huaguang Senior High School in person after months of online interactions was an incredible experience—what started as a virtual connection transformed into real friendships. Stepping into their classrooms of 50 students pushed us out of our comfort zones, deepening our cultural understanding and broadening our perspectives, not just about them but also about our own diverse school community.

During Project Week, our group dove into the heart of Qishan's banana industry, connecting with local communities and engaging in hands-on service projects. We promoted the area's unique culture and tourism by creating fun bilingual materials and videos. We also addressed environmental and agricultural challenges, contributing to sustainability goals. It was an amazing opportunity to experience local life, make a real difference, and support the community's growth in a meaningful way!

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬:

"I was deeply touched and impressed by the local community's passion for preserving their unique culture through music, voice, and actions. Absolutely inspiring." (Belinda from the group)

"Qishan was absolutely fascinating! I spent a wonderful week surrounded by bananas, with boba tea being the highlight of every meal. The vibrant night markets, mouth-watering and affordable street food, and scenic countryside biking were the highlights of my trip." (Riya and Naima from the group)

As cultural ambassadors, we had the amazing opportunity to design and lead cultural exchange activities, connecting with students in the school and nearby elementary schools. These activities allowed Meinong students to explore Hong Kong's Hakka culture and the rich cultures of our international students' home countries.

Through this trip, we aim to inspire our peers to reflect on their experiences and see the connections with the local Hakka culture in Hong Kong when they return home.

During our visit, we stepped into the classroom to immerse ourselves in the local schooling experience and participated in hands-on Hakka handicraft workshops.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬:

This Project Week gave us the opportunity to explore the societal and cultural contrasts between urban Hong Kong’s Cantonese community and rural Meinong’s Hakka heritage. Our group creating cultural booths for the students during the Hakka cultural trip demonstrated that education and enjoyment can go hand in hand.

During the "Northern Vietnam Lakeshore Service and Active Challenge," we immersed ourselves in three traditional villages near the Hoa Binh reservoir in North Vietnam. The week included homestays, community engagement, and activities promoting teamwork and independence. We participated in hiking, kayaking, and service projects such as refurbishing a rooftop and building a bamboo wall.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬:
Our cultural exchange was enriched through art, craft, and dance activities, fostering a deeper understanding of local traditions. It was fascinating to see such a wide variety of uses for bamboo in these rural communities, and it made us realize how we could utilize the materials around us in a more sustainable way.

Staying alongside the children at SOS Iloilo Village in Zarraga, Philippines, we shared our culture through stories, laughter, and a cultural show that brought us closer together. From making friendship bracelets and origami to dancing to the beat of African drums, every activity was an opportunity to learn, teach, and bond. Immersing ourselves in Filipino culture, we ventured into the city's heart, discovering Iloilo’s heritage through historical landmarks, traditional cuisines, and welcoming locals.

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬:

Our engagement with the children at SOS Iloilo Village allowed us to learn, teach, and form strong bonds. The trip also underscored the importance of preserving nature and appreciating the environment, highlighted by our beach clean-up in the coastal area.

Our Project Week was filled with rich culture, meaningful connections, and lifelong memories. SOS Iloilo is a home we’ll never forget.
